COLE LEAVES CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP POST

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma says he decided not to seek another term as leader of the House GOP campaign committee for the best interests of the party.

The position was given Wednesday to Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas.

Cole told The Oklahoman he wanted to avoid strains among House Republican leaders.

Republicans lost about 20 more seats to Democrats in the election, but Cole said his colleagues didn't blame him for it.

Cole said people understood that this election Republicans faced what he termed "one of the worst political environments since Watergate.
